Technical Support

1. About BusyThumbs

BusThumbs.com gives registered users the ability to create multiple moblogs (mobile phone web logs), which can be updated either via the website or via their MMS enabled mobile phone. Registration is free, takes only a minute and your privacy is of course guaranteed.

There is no charge from BusyThumbs for this service. The only fees that apply are the ones set by your mobile phone provider for sending an MMS (about 36p per message on average, at the time of writing - make sure you check with your povider for up to date tarrifs!)

2. Requirements

There are a couple of things you need to use this site, the first and foremost being a computer with an internet connection, which we guess you have if you're reading this. Any other device capable of browsing the World Wide Web should do the trick too, like PDAs, for example.

To make full use of our service, a camera phone is also required. Currently all major mobile phone providers in the UK are supported. The service should work with any model of phone, however we cannot possibly test all the models in existence, so if your particular model is causing you headache, drop us a line, and we'll see what we can do.

3. Technical Matters

In a perfect world, everythings always works as it should, is highly intuitive and never breaks. So hopefully you'll never need to refer to this section. But here are a couple of pointers, on the off chance that our world is not as utopic as our developers would have it.

3.0.1 How do i upload a picture to my blog?

To upload a picture click: Add Entry Online in the Actions menu on your blog. You'll then be presented a form with which to add your Subject title, a Description, Upload destination on your computer, Tags. Once you're happy with your entry you click Add Entry. Your picture will then be uploaded.

3.0.2 How do i edit/delete a picture on my blog?

Firstly you must click into the entry you wish to remove. Then under the images and text there will be 2 buttons. The first one which looks like this is used to edit that entry. Once you've made all the changes to your entry you can then click the Edit Entry button at the bottom to save what you've done.

The second button which looks like this can be clicked to delete that entry. You'll receive a prompt that'll ask whether you're sure you want to delete it.

3.1 So how do I send an image from my phone?

You do this as you would send any other MMS. Please refer to your phone manual or service provider for details on sending multimedia messages (MMS).

The only difference to the average use is that you send the message to an email address, instead of a phone number. At some point in the process, your phone will give you the option to either send to a number or to an email address. Choose the latter, and direct it to the blog MMS address you were given in the blog creation process (in the format of blog_name.your_password).

3.2 How long does it take for my messages to appear?

Our system constantly scans all incoming messages, so your message should appear on your blog within about 5 minutes of sending it.

3.3 My messages never appear!

First of all, make sure that you are sending your messages to the right address! The email address to send messages to consists of your blog name, followed by a dot, followed by your user account password, followed by the @ symbol, then "p88.co.uk" (without the quotation marks). You can see the correct addresses for your blogs in your Control Panel. The email address is not case sensitive. Once you are absolutely sure that you are sending your items to the right address read on.

If you have sent one or more messages to your blog, but they don't appear at all, chances are your particular phone model is causing us some trouble. In this case, please contact us with as much information about your phone model and a description of the message you sent (so we can try and find it and get it working.)

3.4 Do you support BBCode?

Yes, BusyThumbs supports a basic version of the popular BBCode system used on many message boards. For a full list on what codes are supported and details on each, please visit the BBCode Explained page.

3.5 I can't see the Control Panel!

A link to the control panel only becomes available if you are logged in. Please login with the details you registered with and click on the control panel link in the main navigation menu.

3.6 I played around with the advanced customisation options and now my blog doesn't appear correctly anymore!

The advanced customisation options are, as the name implies, for experienced users. If you get really stuck, use the Reset Skin option within the Advanced Customisation section of the control panel, and everything will be back to normal. Note that this will eradicate all your changes to the template.

If you haven't given up fully on your changes yet, here are some things to watch out for. First of all, make sure that you have included all the codes in your HTML. These codes are listed underneath the editing window, with a short explanation of each. One very important code thing to watch out for is to make sure that all links to the skin's graphics and css file have no path. For example, if you uploaded a graphic called "mylogo.jpg" you would include it in your HTML like this: <img src="mylogo.jpg">, and not <img src="/mylogo.jpg">. A second import code to watch out for is XX_CONTENT_XX. This is where your blog entries will go. Leave this out and your blog will appear empty indeed!

3.7 I've forgotten my password!

For lost and forgotten passwords, please visit this page. You will be asked to either enter your username, the email you registered with, or the name of one of your blogs. A password reminder will then be sent to you.

3.8 It says "Advanced Customisation" but I can't edit the template of individual entries!

You may only edit the style 1 entries template. If your blog is currently set to another style, please set it back to style 1 first using the Edit Blog Info link in your Control Panel, then go back to the Advanced Customisation section, and you'll have the option to edit said template.

3.9 I've changed my skin but it doesn't show properly!

Some browser are a bit to keen on cacheing things. Try hitting refresh when viewing your blog for the first time after a skin change - that solves it most of the time.

4. Trackback

4.1 What is Trackback?

TrackBack is a system implemented by many blogging tools that allows a blogger to see who has seen the original post and has written another entry concerning it. The system works by sending a 'ping' between the blogs, and therefore providing the alert.

TrackBack typically appears below a blog entry and shows a summary of what has been written on the target blog, together with a URL and the name of the blog.

Essentially, if you like a particular article and decide to reference it in your blog entry, it sends a ping to that article, notifying it that you referenced it. That article can then display a list of all other articles that referenced it.

4.2 What is automatic pinging?

When you add an entry to your blog, you have the option to auto-ping any URLs within it. To do that, BusyThumbs looks for any [url] BBCode tags in your entry, and for all it finds it goes off to these places and looks for autodiscovery code containing Trackback URLs. Most Trackback enabled systems contain this code, to allow clients like BusyThumbs to automatically access the Trackback URL.

A Trackback URL is the adress of the script that receives the "ping", ie. the notification of reference and stores it.

Once BusyThumbs has found any Trackback URLs, it pings them with the URL, title, and a short excerpt of your article. This will result in this information being listed near the article you referenced, with a link back to your own article!

Note that automatic pinging can take a few moments, so please be patient when adding your entry.

4.3 I can't enter a manual Trackback URL!

You have to choose between automatic and manual pinging. If the automatic pinging checkbox is selected you may not enter any URLs for manual pinging, and vice versa.

4.4 How do I find the Trackback URL of an article I want to ping?

The Trackback URL is generally located near articles that are trackback enabled, often near the comments.

5. Legal Matters

Please refer to our Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy for a full dose of legal matters. The rundown is that we don't give your personal details away, no matter how much anyone pleads us to, won't send you spam or any other unsolicited email. You will get email notifiaction if one of your entries has been selected as an Editor's Pick, and similarly you will get a mail in the unlikely event that one of your pictures had to be removed because of severe indecency.

The general rule for posting pictures is fairly common sense. Nothing illegal, nothing copyrighted, nothing overly political, and nothing rude. We don't mind a bit cheeky, but do mind overtly pornographical (remember there are kids using this too!) We reserve the right to remove a picture if it doesn't fall within these discretionary guidelines.

6. Advertising

Yes, you can advertise on this site. We have very competitive rates, with many different campaign models and advertising zones. For more information on advertising on BusyThumbs, please contact the people who live for this stuff here at .
