On my way to pick up my son from school this afternoon, I passed by a supermarket, bought lapu-lapu (grouper) and saw this pack of fresh fish roe. (I believe they are grouper roe.) I thought instantly that fish offal also qualifies as lamang loob so I bought few grams and decided to make another Lasang Pinoy 9 entry.
‘Awful’ offal, I assume, includes heart, liver, lungs, animal’s entrails, plus tails, feet, and heads. This practice or custom of preparing offal dishes may (or may not) be a reflection of a culture’s economy and resourcefulness.
Happy Easter! So busy with giving a fresh new look to our HS class website that I forgot I have a food blog. So here is a quick one. I’ve realized that I always cook prawn or shrimps with butter for the past years that I forgot how simple cooking shrimps can be like halabos na hipon (shrimps cooked w/ salt and from its own juice - no water at all) .
Haha! I bought mangoes from the Russian store nearby. I happen to pass by their fruit counter and I know from that distinctive sweet smell that they gotta be delicious. I wasn’t disappointed. Not sure where they came from as my mandarin is limited and of course I couldn’t speak a single Russian word.
Normal life resumes (tee hee!) and I wanna share this stuffed pusit (squid) recipe. I did this a week after I cooked my calamari relleno. We all liked it and so I thought another round won’t hurt. No minced meat this time around but instead I chopped the head and tentacles and include them in the filling. Below is basically the same recipe but of course amended according to what I did here.
Lasang Pinoy 8: Mom’s Bulanglang Ala-Eh Style

As the youngest in the family, I was the last on the list to be asked by my mom to cook. I remember I wanted my folks to at least let me wash the rice before steaming. So if my memory is correct I was about 9-10years old when my Dad helped me through my very first experiments.
We have been quite busy for the past several months and my cooking has been alternately quickies or leisurely-cooking while working. The quickies in the kitchen of course are my stir-fry dishes, quilos, fried meat/fish, halabos (shellfish cooked with salt and from its own juice and no water at all), easy soups and the likes. And when I say leisurely-cooking while working, this is slow-cooking for hours that I always make it a point to set my alarm clock every 30 minutes just so I won’t burn anything and trigger the smoke detector. Of course, leisurely styles of cooking like braising and stewing makes melt-in-the-mouth meals not possible with the quickies.
Sinigang na Bangus sa Kamias

I still have few pictures of my mom’s cooking taken during my last vacation that I want to share. Here is one of her many variations of sinigang (sour broth). Sinigang maybe cooked with fish, meat (maybe lean meat, fatty or bony parts) or shellfish. Vegetables vary depending on availability and, of course, preference. The most common souring ingredients are fresh sampalok (tamarind), bayabas (guava), kamias (bilimbi) or simply a pouch of sinigang mix available at the store nearest you.
Lasang Pinoy 8: Kusinang Bulilit, Lutong Paslit!

Now that it’s going to be my turn to host Lasang Pinoy, I got so excited I couldn’t think of a theme! We finally came up with this wonderful topic about cooking with children. Kusinang Bulilit, lutong paslit! (Little kitchen, cooking by children!) So what would this be all about? As I reflect deeply on the subject and start to write about this announcement, I can hear my son here saying a line about … “I like eating and cooking is fun!” He would even say he would like to bake a cake. “May I ask you how?” He said all he needs to do is… “take some milk, take some flour and 2 eggs.”
