Lone Star Engine After the initial break-in, let the engine idle and make any engine adjustments that may be required (ignition timing, idle speed, idle mixture, valve lash, transmission throttle cable, etc.). If the computer has any special "learning" requirements, follow the procedure as outlined to recalibrate/reset the computer.

Check all the gauge readings (oil pressure, coolant temperature and charging) to make sure they are functioning and reading within normal ranges.

Make sure the engine reaches and maintains normal operating temperature (check for proper cooling fan operation).

The addition of a spacer effectively increases the distance between the carburetor and the floor of the intake manifold plenum. In many cases, this straightens out the intake mixture flow pattern. Because of this added distance, the carburetor signal is weakened. And when the signal is weakened then larger jets in the carburetor will be required. Carburetor spacers designed with four separate holes tend to recapture the velocity of the mixture stream, which has been lost when an open carburetor spacer is installed. In simple terms, more exit velocity in the mixture stream creates a stronger carburetor signal than that found with an open spacer. Generally speaking, the jet size will still have to be increased when a four-hole spacer is used, but not as much as with an open spacer.

Worse than outright failure is an oil filter that fails in its task without ever letting on. A poorly constructed internal bypass valve inside the filter can open unnecessarily and cause the oil to simply go around the filter. Filtration is lost without any outward signs. Conversely a clogged oil filter will also cause a bypass valve to open. Just because an oil filter looks right or screws onto an engine does not mean it's the right one for the job. Oil filters are manufactured to match engine requirements to maintain the correct oil pressure, flow volume, pressure relief valve opening and of course filtration. Always select only an oil filter designed and built specifically to work with the engine and oil system it is to be spun onto. Saving money on an oil filter is right up there with getting a deal on day-old Sushi and bargain basement brain surgery.
